The Ten Commands

Can you think of household rules you had growing up as a child? Some might’ve been unique to your context, but a lot of them were probably pretty standard - don’t run out into the road, keep your room clean, don’t hit your brother… It’s likely we all had some of those rules (or a version of them) when we were young, regardless of where or when we grew up. That’s because those rules are useful for anyone, anywhere, anytime. They keep us and the people around us safe, and they help us to live a good life. Some rules are timeless. Thousands of years ago, God gave Israel the 10 Commandments. The 10 Commandments are one of the most recognizable parts of the Bible to many people. They were given to Israel through their leader Moses shortly after they were rescued from Egypt. They were given the form of a covenant, an ancient form of a modern day contract. Some say that the 10 Commandments are outdated and no longer important for us, but they still ring true today, because they are moral laws. Although they are ancient guidelines, they are still viable today as principles that are important to live by in life. In the next 6 weeks, you will be interacting with each of the 10 Commandments & learning how important they are for your daily life as a follower of Jesus.

Inside The Guide

Each guide is broken up into six weeks. Below is a small insight into each week.

It is God’s love that saves us, not laws or commands. If laws and works don’t save us, why are they important?

Command 1

If I committed to following this command completely, how would my life be different?

Commands 2 & 3

Do I have idols in my life that take the biggest spot in my heart? Do I use language that uses God’s name improperly? How do these two things keep me separated from God?

Commands 4 & 5

What does it mean to practice the Sabbath? What steps can I take this week to help me practice this better?

Commands 6, 7, & 8

Terrible things like murder start with much smaller actions. What does Jesus say about the importance of confessing anger?

Commands 9 & 10

What does God think about lying? Why am I tempted to lie?
